Biography for Van Cliburn

Van Cliburn made his performance debut with the New York Philharmonic shortly after graduating from The Julliard School of Music. He became an American hero in 1958 with his victory at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. The American people were still reeling from the Soviet Union Sputnik launch and having an American win a prestigious Soviet classical music competition served to uplift the people and reduce cultural tension. In 1962, he established the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, a prolific competition featuring acclaimed judges and competitors from around the globe. Van Cliburn passed away in 2013, leaving behind a legacy of cultural diplomacy through musical excellence.
