Seeking Solitude with Dale Innes

Renowned musicologist, author and pianist Dale Innes recently shared her passion and unique insight with our patrons during an animated and insightful presentation on Glenn Gould, Johann Sebastian Bach and The Goldberg Variations. She discussed her recently published book, Seeking Solitude: Glenn Gould and the Goldberg Variations, which encourages each reader to take a critical look at reception and authenticity in the performance of Baroque music. Innes examines the influence that Northern Ontario had on Gould's desire for solitude and artistic inspiration. Her presentation encouraged further intrigue and curiosity by offering a brief glimpse of his eccentric life and notable career.

In a recent interview with Northern Ontario Magazine, Innes described the motivation in her writing. "I decided to put Gould and all his interpretive controversy into some kind of meaningful context. I focused on comparing six different Gould recordings of J.S. Bach's famed Goldberg Variations and put this study into the historical context of Baroque performance practice and into the psychological context of his life journey." She elaborated on the connection between setting and inspiration in an earlier interview with The Sault Star Newspaper. "I do believe [Northern Ontario] has had a profound impact on his style of playing. Coming up here was really a source of refuge for him."

Come by our Steinway Piano Gallery Toronto to peruse a copy of Innes' newly released book. We also invite you to experience a reproduced performance of the immortal artist Glenn Gould, produced by the incomparable Steinway Spirio Piano.
